KFC History

Harland Sanders opened his first restaurant in a service station in Corbin, Kentucky in 1930, which he named “Sanders Court & Café.” In 1936, the governor of Kentucky made Harland Sanders an honorary Kentucky Colonel in recognition of his delicious cuisine. The Sanders Court and Café burned down in 1939 but was rebuilt and reopened.

In 1940, Colonel Sander’s Original Recipe™ chicken was introduced. In 1952, Harland Sanders traveled from town to town, cooking chicken for restaurant owners and employees to actively franchise his business. The first franchise opened in 1952 in Salt Lake City, Utah, with the agreement that Sanders would receive a nickel for each chicken sold.

In 1955, Sanders sold the service station in Corbin, Kentucky, and after paying his debts, was broke. He went on the road to sell his secret Original Recipe™ to restaurants. By 1960, there were 190 KFC franchises and 400 franchise units in the United States and Canada, and by 1964, there were over 600 franchised outlets, including the first overseas outlet in England.

In 1964, Sanders sold his interest in the U.S. company for $2 million, yet still remains a spokesman for the company. By 1971, there were 3,500 franchised and company-owned restaurants.

In 2008, the KFC logo was updated to show the colonel with a red apron to symbolize the “home-style culinary heritage” of the brand and to remind customers KFC chicken is prepared by hand, just like Colonel Sanders prepared it 50 years ago.
